Roti Kapada Aur Makaan was written, produced and directed by Manoj Kumar who has also played a role in this movie. In this movie social issues and the struggle of a man is shown. It starred Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor and Manoj kumar. This was a commercially successful movie. It also got remade in Telugu film Jeevana Poratam.

This movie revolves around Vijay who was from a middle class family with responsibility after his father's retirement.  He worked as a low paid singer and he faced betrayal and hardship in his life. But at last he  finds hope in helping a friend in need. In this Laxmikant- Pyarelal has composed songs together.
